The Winter Fuel Payment 2026 will be paid to most eligible pensioners during November and December. For winter 2026 to 2027, you must have been born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Your circumstances during the qualifying week, 21 to 27 September 2026, decide whether you qualify and how much you receive.

Who gets Winter Fuel Payment 2026?
You can get the payment if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The qualifying week has already passed, so the rules look back to where you usually lived and your circumstances between 21 and 27 September 2026.
Most people receive it automatically and should get a letter in October or November stating the amount. Having no letter does not automatically mean you are ineligible; you may need to claim. Regular pension dates are separate, as our State Pension payment day guide explains.
How much is Winter Fuel Payment 2026?
If you live alone, or nobody else living with you is eligible:
| Your date of birth | Payment if you live alone or no one you live with is eligible |
|---|---|
| 28 September 1946 to 27 June 1960 | £200 |
| Before 28 September 1946 | £300 |
Household circumstances can reduce the amount each person receives:
| Situation | Amount |
|---|---|
| You live with another eligible person; neither receives Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA | £100 if both are younger; £100 if you are younger and the other person older; £200 if you are older and the other person younger; £150 each if both are older |
| You and your partner jointly claim one of those benefits | One payment of £200 if both are younger, or £300 if either is older |
| You receive one of those benefits outside a joint claim | £200 or £300, following the date-of-birth table above |
| You are an eligible care home resident | £100 in the younger band or £150 in the older band |
Who is excluded from Winter Fuel Payment 2026?
You will not be eligible if any of the following applied:
- You usually live outside England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
- You were only visiting during the qualifying week but usually live elsewhere.
- You were in hospital receiving free treatment for the whole qualifying week and for the year before it.
- You need permission to enter the UK, and your leave says you cannot claim public funds.
- You were in prison for the whole qualifying week.
A care home does not automatically exclude you. You are ineligible only if both apply: you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related ESA, and you lived in the care home for the whole period from 29 June 2026 or earlier through the qualifying week. See our DWP Christmas payment dates 2026 guide.
The £35,000 rule: payment first, recovery later
Income over £35,000 does not stop the payment being made. HMRC instead recovers the full amount through the tax system. Your partner’s income does not count towards your individual total.
HMRC will usually collect it by changing your tax code. If you complete Self Assessment, it is dealt with through your return as the Winter Fuel Payment charge. HMRC says it will usually include the amount on online returns automatically, but check that it is there.
Important exception: people who received Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, income-related ESA or Universal Credit during the qualifying week are not liable, regardless of income.
The opt-out window for this winter has closed. If you are eligible and did not opt out, you will receive the payment and, if liable, have it recovered later.
Do you need to claim Winter Fuel Payment 2026?
No claim is needed if you receive State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, PIP, Carer’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, income-related ESA, Incapacity Benefit, or a war pension or industrial injuries award listed by GOV.UK.
You do need to claim if you receive none of those and either you have never had a Winter Fuel Payment, or you have deferred your State Pension since your previous payment. Claim by post or phone by 31 March 2027.
When will the money arrive?
Most payments are made automatically in November or December 2026. Your letter should state the amount and receiving account, usually the account used for your State Pension or other benefits.
If neither a letter nor the money has arrived by 27 January 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. Our Payment Countdown checker covers regular benefit dates, not individual Winter Fuel Payment claims.
