If you are checking your Universal Credit payment dates for December 2026, Christmas changes things this year. Christmas Day falls on a Friday and the Boxing Day holiday moves to Monday 28 December, so any payment due between Friday 25 and Monday 28 December will be paid early, on Thursday 24 December. Payments due on New Year’s Day or the weekend after it arrive early too, on Thursday 31 December. Nothing about your claim changes — the money simply lands earlier.
Universal Credit payment dates December 2026 at a glance
The rule behind every date below is the standard one on GOV.UK: after your first payment, you are paid on the same date each month, and if that date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, you are paid on the working day before. Apply that rule to the Christmas calendar and you get this:
| Your usual payment date | You will be paid on |
|---|---|
| Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) | Thursday 24 December |
| Saturday 26 December | Thursday 24 December |
| Sunday 27 December | Thursday 24 December |
| Monday 28 December (Boxing Day holiday) | Thursday 24 December |
| Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December | Your usual date — no change |
| Friday 1 January (New Year’s Day) | Thursday 31 December |
| Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 January | Thursday 31 December |
| Monday 4 January onwards | Your usual date — no change in England, Wales and Northern Ireland |
Scotland has one extra wrinkle: Monday 4 January 2027 is a Scottish bank holiday (the substitute day for 2 January, a Saturday). If your date is Monday 4 January, the working day before is Thursday 31 December, because Friday 1 January is a bank holiday everywhere in the UK.

There is no single Universal Credit payment day
One thing causes most of the confusion here: Universal Credit payment dates in December 2026 are different for every claimant. There is no one national payday — your date is set by your own claim.
Universal Credit works in monthly assessment periods. Your first assessment period starts on the day you claim, and you are usually paid 7 days after each assessment period ends. From then on, you are paid on that same date every month — until a weekend or bank holiday moves it, as Christmas does this year.
Your online statement shows the amount you are going to get. If you live in Scotland, you can also choose to be paid twice a month instead of once, which gives you two dates to track rather than one.
Universal Credit payment dates December 2026: what time will my payment arrive?
The DWP does not publish an exact time of day, and anyone who promises you a precise minute is guessing. Payments are sent for the payment date itself, and banks credit accounts at different points during that day. The sensible approach:
- Check the date first, not the clock — and remember your December date may be the early date, Thursday 24 December, not your usual one.
- Give it until the end of the payment day before treating it as missing. A payment due on 24 December that is not showing at 9 am is usually still on its way.
- Rent and Direct Debits do not move just because your benefit did, so plan around the real dates.
An early payment is not an extra payment
Getting paid on 24 December instead of 28 December feels like a bonus. It is not — it is the same payment, moved. Your January payment still falls on your usual date, so the gap after Christmas is a few days longer than normal. Our Payment Countdown checker works out your own next dates, including every early shift, in a few seconds.
What to do if your Universal Credit payment is missing
If the payment day has passed with no money in your account, work through these steps:
- Check the right date. Around Christmas, most “missing” payments are simply due on the early date — or not due yet. Check your usual monthly date against the table above.
- Check your statement and journal. Sign in to your account: your statement shows what you will be paid, and your journal shows any message about your claim.
- Check your bank details. If you have changed accounts, make sure the new details are on your claim.
- Leave a journal message asking for the payment to be checked if everything looks right and the money still has not arrived by the end of the payment day.
- Call the helpline on 0800 328 5644, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm (free). It is closed on bank holidays, so on 25 and 28 December the journal is your route.
Frequently asked questions
Will Universal Credit be paid early at Christmas 2026?
Yes, if your usual date falls between Friday 25 and Monday 28 December — those payments are made on Thursday 24 December. Payments due on normal working days, such as 29, 30 and 31 December, are paid as usual.
My payment date is the 28th. When will I be paid in December 2026?
Monday 28 December 2026 is the substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day, so you are paid on the working day before the whole break: Thursday 24 December. Friday 25 December is also a bank holiday, which is why it moves back to the Thursday.
Does an early Christmas payment change my January payment date?
No. Your usual monthly date stays the same — the early payment is a one-off adjustment. The only January change is at the start: payments due on Friday 1, Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 January are paid on Thursday 31 December.
What if I am paid twice a month in Scotland?
The same rule applies to each of your two monthly dates. Check both against the table above, and use the statement in your online account to confirm what you will receive.
