State Pension Payments in January 2027: NI-Number Days and the New Year Early Payment

Published: November 5, 20265 min read

State Pension payments due on Friday 1 January 2027 will usually arrive early, on Thursday 31 December 2026. New Year’s Day is a bank holiday, and GOV.UK says you might be paid earlier if your normal payment day is a bank holiday. For Friday payers — those whose National Insurance number ends in 80 to 99 — that means the first payment of 2027 lands on the last working day of 2026 instead.

The State Pension is usually paid into your account every four weeks, on a weekday set by the last two digits of your National Insurance number. That weekday does not change from month to month, so January’s story is really about two dates: the New Year bank holiday, and the extra Scottish holiday on Monday 4 January. Get those two right, and the rest of January follows your normal pattern.

Your State Pension payment day by NI number

Last 2 digits of NI number Payment day January 2027 note
00 to 19 Monday 4 January is a bank holiday in Scotland only
20 to 39 Tuesday Normal Tuesdays in January
40 to 59 Wednesday Normal Wednesdays in January
60 to 79 Thursday Normal Thursdays in January
80 to 99 Friday Due 1 January moves to 31 December

This table is published by GOV.UK for the new State Pension, and it is the same pattern that applies to the basic State Pension. After you claim, you receive a letter about your payments. Your first payment will be no later than five weeks after the date you choose to start, and you might get part of a payment before your first full payment. After that, you get a full payment every four weeks on your NI-number weekday.

The New Year early payment, step by step

Friday 1 January 2027 is New Year’s Day, a bank holiday across the UK. A Friday payer whose four-weekly payment would fall on that day is therefore paid earlier, on Thursday 31 December 2026 — the working day before the holiday. You do not need to apply for the early payment, and it is the same payment, paid sooner, not an extra payment.

There is a second, Scotland-only shift in the same week. In Scotland, Monday 4 January 2027 is the substitute bank holiday for 2 January, which falls on a Saturday. A Monday payer in Scotland whose payment falls on 4 January therefore moves back through two consecutive holidays — Friday 1 January and Monday 4 January — to Thursday 31 December 2026 as well. In England and Wales, Monday 4 January is an ordinary working day, so a Monday payment due on that date stays on 4 January.

If your payment day is Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, January 2027 holds no bank-holiday surprise for you. Your payment should land on your usual weekday in your usual four-weekly cycle. The same applies to Monday payers in England and Wales, and to Friday payers whose cycle does not land on 1 January itself.

Christmas 2026: the same rule, one week earlier

It is worth remembering the Christmas shift as well, because it affects the payment immediately before the New Year one. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December, and the Boxing Day bank holiday is observed on Monday 28 December. Friday payers due on 25 December and Monday payers due on 28 December will usually both be paid on Thursday 24 December 2026. That means some pensioners will see two early payments close together — one at Christmas and one at New Year — followed by a longer gap before the next four-weekly payment. Budgeting for that longer gap is the practical point of knowing both dates in advance.

Changing your bank account and other practical points

If you want to change the account your State Pension is paid into, GOV.UK says to tell the Pension Service. Do this in good time before a bank-holiday week if you can, so that an account change and an early payment do not collide. If a payment has not arrived by the end of the expected day, first check that the account details held for you are correct, then contact the Pension Service through the route given in your pension letters.

Dates in this article are checked against GOV.UK, and the same NI-number table is explained in more detail in our State Pension payment day guide. Frequently asked questions

When will I get my State Pension at New Year 2027?

If your normal payment day is Friday and your payment falls on Friday 1 January 2027, you will usually be paid on Thursday 31 December 2026 instead. If your payment falls on another weekday in that week, it should arrive on your usual day.

Why is 4 January 2027 different in Scotland?

Monday 4 January 2027 is the substitute bank holiday for 2 January in Scotland, because 2 January falls on a Saturday. Monday payers in Scotland whose payment falls on 4 January are therefore paid on Thursday 31 December 2026, working back past both the New Year and the 4 January holidays. In England and Wales, 4 January is a normal working day.

How is my State Pension payment day decided?

It depends on the last two digits of your National Insurance number: 00 to 19 is Monday, 20 to 39 is Tuesday, 40 to 59 is Wednesday, 60 to 79 is Thursday, and 80 to 99 is Friday. Your payment is usually made every four weeks on that weekday.

Does an early payment mean I get paid twice?

No. An early payment is the same four-weekly payment, paid sooner because your normal day is a bank holiday. Your next payment follows your normal four-weekly cycle, so the gap after an early payment will feel a little longer than usual.
