Child Benefit Payments Due 28 December Will Arrive 24 December — and the Northern Ireland Exception

Published: November 5, 20265 min read

Child Benefit payments due on Monday 28 December 2026 will be paid on Thursday 24 December 2026. That date comes straight from GOV.UK’s official Child Benefit bank-holiday table, which lists 28 December 2026 against a payment date of 24 December. Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday, so for most families this is the one December payment that moves — and it moves earlier, not later.

There is one important exception to know about, and it only affects Northern Ireland. Child Benefit due on Tuesday 29 December 2026 is paid on Wednesday 30 December 2026 in Northern Ireland only. Everywhere else, a payment due on 29 December stays on 29 December, because that Tuesday is an ordinary working day. Keep that distinction in mind before you assume a neighbour’s date applies to you.

How Child Benefit payment dates normally work

Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. If you are a single parent, or you or your partner receive certain benefits such as Income Support, you can instead be paid weekly. Your award notice tells you when your first payment is due, and you can usually count forward four weeks from that date to work out when you will be paid next.

GOV.UK adds one warning that matters at Christmas: do not count forward if your payment was due on a bank holiday, because the dates are different. That is exactly what happens here. If your four-weekly cycle would put a payment on 28 December, counting forward blindly from your previous payment would still give you 28 December — but the official table moves it to 24 December. Always check the bank-holiday table for the festive period rather than relying on simple addition.

How to check a payment you are expecting

There are two straightforward ways to check when you were last paid. First, check your bank statement: the payment reference will begin with “HMRC Child Benefit” and is made up of 18 characters. Second, you can view your Child Benefit payment history online and see up to five previous payments, although you will need to sign in and may need to prove your identity with photo ID such as a passport.

Counting forward from a confirmed previous payment is the most reliable way to predict your next one, outside bank-holiday weeks. If your last payment was on a Monday, your next payments will normally also fall on Mondays, four weeks apart. If your cycle lands on a Tuesday, the same applies. The day of the week stays steady; only the calendar date moves, and only bank holidays break the pattern.

If you have not got your payment

GOV.UK’s advice is to check your payment date and contact your bank before calling the Child Benefit Office if a payment is late. A payment may have stopped because you have not told the Child Benefit Office that your bank has changed, because you have not replied to a letter from the office, because your child now lives with someone else, or because you are no longer eligible to claim. Checking those points first can save a long phone call.

Public holidays in Scotland and Northern Ireland can also cause a delay. GOV.UK warns that your payment might be delayed if the bank is closed for a public holiday on the day HMRC pays you, and advises checking with your bank for the date you will get your payment. In Scotland, local holidays can have the same effect in some areas. Dates in this article are checked against GOV.UK, and our homepage Payment Countdown checker can help you track your next date.

Frequently asked questions

Is Child Benefit paid early at Christmas 2026?

Yes, for payments due on Monday 28 December 2026. GOV.UK’s bank-holiday table moves those payments to Thursday 24 December 2026. Payments due on other Mondays and Tuesdays in December stay on their usual dates.

Why is 29 December different in Northern Ireland?

GOV.UK’s table lists 29 December 2026 as moving to 30 December in Northern Ireland only, reflecting a local bank-holiday arrangement there. In England, Scotland and Wales, a payment due on 29 December stays on 29 December.

How do I work out my next Child Benefit payment?

Count forward four weeks from your last payment, unless that payment was due on a bank holiday — in that case, use GOV.UK’s bank-holiday table instead, because the dates are different. Your award notice and your online payment history, showing up to five previous payments, are the best starting points.

What should I do if my Child Benefit is late?

Check your payment date and your bank first, then contact the Child Benefit Office if it is still missing. Check whether you have changed banks, missed a letter, or had a change in your child’s living arrangements or your eligibility, as those are the common reasons GOV.UK lists for payments stopping.
